Sarment is a piece for harp, marimba and vibraphone (the mallets only require one player). Räihälä wrote it during spring 1993. At first he planned a strict system for the structure, but in the end the work became relatively improvisatory. The name means 'a vine' in English and comes from the freely flowing nature of this music. Sarment lasts about ten minutes and is built on various playing technics and tone colours. The piece was commissioned and premièred by Mikko Leistola (harp) and Risto Pulkkinen (mallets) in Turku in April 1994.
