Hinchcliffe Thumper -Tha' Bloody Intermezzo was written in 1993. In the program note Räihälä wrote about the importance of what he called 'densification points' in any composition - there would be about half a dozen focal points in any piece of music, no matter whether it is question of a short solo piece or an opera lasting three hours. Hinchcliffe Thumper -Tha' Bloody Intermezzo lasts just over four minutes but nevertheless demonstrates well Räihälä's ideas at that time. It does not require an all too large symphony orchestra but is still powerful and impressively volatile piece of music.

The first performace of the piece was heard in the Ung Nordisk Musik Festival in Malmö, Sweden, in September 1994, where the UNM Orchestra was led by the Danish conductor Peter Ettrup Larsen.
